It's Rocket Science - Great Exhibition of the North @ Discovery Museum

Robert Stephenson’s iconic steam locomotive Rocket returns to Tyneside, on loan to Discovery Museum from the Science Museum Group as part of Great Exhibition of the North, 22 June - 9 September 2018.

Join our volunteer team to help our visitors have an extraordinary experience and find out how this historic engine’s ground-breaking design heralded the birth of passenger railways and celebrate the region’s world-famous industrial heritage.

What's involved?

The information provided below is typical of what we want our Get North Makers volunteer team to take part in at Discovery Museum.

The volunteering day will be split into 2 shifts

09.45 – 14.00

13.45 – 18.00

Roles include:

Schools support (2 volunteers per session)

  • Welcoming schools into Discovery Museum, ensuring coats, bags, lunches etc are carefully and securely stored
  • Marshalling each school group to their workshop/tour
  • Responding to basic questions from students and adult helpers
  • Keeping the group to time
  • Supporting the Learning team with their workshops/tours as needed
  • Ensuring that the school group collects all their belongings at the end of their visit
  • Providing a cheerful farewell

Meeters and Greeters (5 volunteers per session)

  • Welcome visitors to the Museum
  • Process exhibition tickets
  • Provide basic information about ‘what’s on’ within the museum
  • Provide basic orientation information – location of café, shop, toilets etc
  • Ask visitors for a donation to support longer-term running of museum
  • Help visitors around the museum, calling lifts etc
  • Provide a cheerful farewell

Exhibition supervision (5 volunteers per session)

  • Welcome visitors to the exhibition
  • Check exhibition tickets
  • Supervise exhibition spaces
  • Provide basic information about the exhibitions
  • Provide basic orientation information – location of café, shop, toilets etc
  • Marshalling to ensure a continuous flow of visitors through the exhibition spaces

Security supervision (4 volunteers per session)

  • As above but with limited time for interaction with visitors as this role is primarily about safeguarding Rocket and the other objects on display

Our volunteers will have access to bespoke training opportunities in the lead up to the event which will provide the tools, skills and confidence to fulfil their roles.

As a volunteer you will also be rewarded for your commitment with exclusive invitations to previews, social gatherings and celebration events

You will be working with Museum and event professionals, gaining experience from observing and being involved with what they do.

You will be involved in the biggest event in England this year and your involvement will be part of its legacy.

This will undoubtedly, look great on your CV!

There will be full training involved in taking on this role which you must make yourself available for.

Once you sign up we will set up an account for you on the Great Exhibition of the North online volunteer portal which will enable you to book into training opportunities and schedule your own volunteer hours.

Great Exhibition of the North - Friday 22nd June, 2018

This once in a lifetime, must-see event is free and family friendly. Opening with the spectacular ‘Get North’ event on the 22nd June, it finishes in style with the world-famous Great North Run and the powerful ‘Creating the Future’ closing weekend on 8th and 9th September.
